Understanding Autism at Welcome to the Lions Den!
At Welcome to the Lions Den!, we recognise the unique strengths and challenges associated with autism. Our approach integrates theories of social development and alternative processing models to create an inclusive environment. Through our Bush Tucker Workshops and Survival Skills Training, we aim to foster understanding and empathy while providing enriching experiences in nature.

Embracing Different Perspectives
Understanding autism requires recognising the diversity in individuals' cognitive and social experiences. Our programmes are designed to incorporate the theory of mind, which helps participants understand that others have different thoughts, feelings, and intentions. By using this framework, we aim to create a supportive space where everyone can learn from each other, fostering mutual respect and connection. We believe that by teaching participants about the unique ways autistic individuals perceive the world, we can bridge the gap in communication and enhance social engagement during our bush tucker workshops and survival skills training.

Creating Meaningful Connections
Early social development theories highlight the importance of social interactions in shaping an individual's ability to connect with others. At Welcome to the Lions Den!, we implement these theories into our nature immersion experiences. Our activities encourage participants to work together, fostering collaboration and communication. We are aware of the double empathy problem, which suggests that both autistic individuals and neurotypical individuals can misunderstand each other's perspectives. Therefore, we strive to create an environment where everyone is encouraged to share their experiences and viewpoints, ultimately leading to deeper understanding and friendships.

Utilising Alternative Processing Models
We also incorporate alternative information processing models, such as weak central coherence theory, into our training sessions. This theory explains how individuals with autism may focus on details rather than the bigger picture. Our workshops aim to highlight the strengths of this perspective, encouraging participants to appreciate the unique skills that come with different ways of processing information. Additionally, we explore Bayesian theories, which provide insights into how individuals make sense of their experiences and interactions. By integrating these models into our curriculum, we equip all participants with tools to better understand and connect with each other in our immersive learning environments.
